The Magic Bank Account

When I was young, my Mom shared something with me that I didn't know at the time would come to shape who I am and how I live my life today. This golden nugget of information has had such a profound impact on my life and beliefs that I thought I'd share it in hopes that it pushes others to be happy, kinder to themselves, and to be the best version of themselves.

Have you ever heard of The Magic Bank Account? This concept was used by Alabama's Football coach, Bear Bryant, and it inspired me to evaluate how I am using my most precious resource β€” TIME.

Below is the passage.

Picture This - You won the following prize in a contest. Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400 in your checking account for personal use.

  1. Everything you don't spend each day will be taken from you.

  2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account.

  3. You may only spend it.

  4. Each morning, upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for the new day.

  5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, "game over!" It can close the account and you will not receive a new one?

So, what would you do with your prize?

Now I'd assume you're saying to yourself something similar to what I did when I first read this. If so, it probably sounded something like: I'd buy anything and everything I wanted. Not just for me, but for all my friends and family. I wouldn't stop there, I'd also buy things for people I didn't know, I'd try to make the world a better place and live my best life. I'd try to spend every single last penny, and use it all so there would be nothing left knowing the bank could say game over at any given time.

Well the kicker of this whole thing, and the golden nugget that I mentioned above is that, THIS GAME IS REAL! Every single one of us is already a winner of a much more valuable prize, we often just don't seem to realize it or live like it.

That prize is TIME!

  1. Every morning when we wake up we receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life.

  2. When we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is NOT credited to us.

  3. What we haven't used up that day is forever lost.

  4. Yesterday is forever gone.

  5. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time without warning (the bank being death).

So the question I always ask myself is, WHAT WILL I DO WITH MY 86,400 SECONDS TODAY?

The seconds in the prize we all currently win are way more valuable than the same in dollars. So every day you wake up, be grateful for life, dont be so hard on yourself, smile more, live in the present moment because soon all of our time runs out.

So how are you spending your time?
